This five-day introductory hands-on course will focus on building and developing local capacity for beneficial fire, with a focus on cultural and ecological objectives. This training will incorporate hands-on field scenarios, fireline leadership skills, and local fire ecology and fire management.
Applications close on 1/6/2025 at 11:59pm PST. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as there is significant interest and class size is limited to 30. Applicants will be notified of their application status by 1/13/2025.
DATES: February 18-22, 2025 8am-4pm
LOCATION: The training will take place in person in Los Angeles County. The classroom portion (February 18-21) will take place in Northeast Los Angeles. The field day (February 22) will take place in the Antelope Valley.
Participants without a vehicle will be accommodated. Please fill out the application form and we will reach out to you with more information.
WHO SHOULD APPLY: This course is designed to be introductory. No prior experience in fire is required. Priority applicants include residents of LA County and surrounding areas, Native/Indigenous people, LA PBA members, and local community-based organizations.
COST: There is no cost to register for this event.
NWCG and Work Capacity Test information: This is a NWCG Certified Course that will cover NWCG courses S-130, S-190, L-180 and IS-100. It includes work capacity test (WCT) and practice shelter deployment. Online completion of IS-700 is required prior to the start of the course. Participants who successfully complete the course will qualify as Firefighter Type II (FFT2).
The Work Capacity Test required for FFT2 certification is walking 3 miles in 45 minutes wearing a 45lb pack. Applicants who are physically unable to complete the WCT (or unsure of their ability) will still be considered.
